The SRI value is a calculation method as per ASTM E1980-11(2019) using Solar reflectance(or sometimes referred as TSR total solar reflectace) and thermal emittance values to determine the roof's overall capacity to refuse solar heat.
Solar reflectance is the amount of solar energy (across the solar spectra UV, VIS, IR) that is reflected away from the building, back to the atmosphere. The higher the solar reflectance is of a coating, the less heat the building have to absorb. Thermal emittance is the relative abilility of a roof to emit (release the heat back into atmosphere) heat that has been absorbed.
Therfore, the higher the SRI value is, the greater ability the coating has to reject solar heat absorption, maintaining a much cooler indoor ambient air temperature even without the need of air conditioning.
The SRI solar reflectance index is a scale of 1 to 100 that is a measure of a roof’s combined thermal properties. It is defined so that a standard black (reflectance 0.05, emittance 0.90) is 0 and a standard white (reflectance 0.80, emittance 0.90) is 100. But some hot roofs can have negative values, and most white thermo-reflective roofs, white thermoplastics and cool pavement coatings have scores higher than 100.
